Lovelorn Adalbert too young to wed

 November 8, 1910

Prince Adalbert has fallen in love with a beautiful princess from Thuringia, but his father, Kaiser Wilhelm II, has forbidden the match. He says that Adalbert is too young to wed. Adalbert met his princess "on the brow of an ancient hill," according to the report in the Los Angeles Times. The princess was driving the car -- the only motor car in her "papa's broad dominions" -- and she happened on a prince from a "rival state". A prince, who happened to be handy with his hands, was able to fix the princess' car.

The princess "fell desperately in love with Adalbert," who traveled to her father's castle and asked for her hand in marriage. The Kaiser soon learned the princess's name, her age, her beauty, and her poverty, but he forbade "the banns."

He believes that Adalbert, who is serving in the German navy, should not marry until he reaches a certain rank. Adalbert has reminded his father that he is 26 years old, older than when his brothers, Wilhelm, and Eitel Friedrich, married. "I am treated like a schoolboy," Adalbert has said in regard to his father's denial of the marriage.

But who is the Thuringian princess? Her identity has been kept secret. She was born in 1892. She is "extremely beautiful." She's a blonde. Her favorite color is blue. And, she has a maid named Kathe. She recently sent Adalbert a strand of her hair in "a locket set with pearls." In return, Adalbert sent his love a miniature portrait of himself.

One question remains: does this Thuringian princess actually exist? All we know is that Adalbert is "deeply in love, he neglects his naval duties, and he has quarreled" with his father.
