Swedish papers are lukewarm about the engagement

Some criticism about Crown Princess Victoria's engagement in today's Swedish papers

http://www.thelocal.se/17828/20090225/

and an article in Bild (in English) by Alexander von Schonburg (who happens to be a Count, actually, and is married to Princess Irina of Hesse). Oh, he's also the younger brother of Gloria, Princess of Thurn und Taxis.

Well... seems they were critizising the requirement (in the Constution!) to ask the Government for approuval...

Lukewarm ;=)

On the other hand there were 2 hours direct on National Television (and I suppose the same coverage on the one private chain).

That most certainly would not have happened 33 years ago ;=)

There has to be certain standards for royal marriages - even if it means just seeking permission...
so, please keep your eye out for new postcards ... :)

Anonymous in Dagens Nyheter tried to pretend otherwise... and was duly scolded by some of the blogs ;=)

There was also Morning Television.

I cannot stress enough for you how important a difference this is.

The 1960ies and 1970ies were obcessed with "leftist" views (not all of them leftist) and Guerilla romance...

I personnally saw the Kmer Rouge p r a s e d (by public persons now forgotten) several times over on State Television...

To be Royal - or even a non socialist Bourgeois - at that time (and in the case of the then Crown Prince Dyslectic to boot, i.e. accused of being STUPID) wasn't easy. The Prime Minister of the day (Olof Palme) even claimed we where a "stroke of pen" from the Republic...

Remember there were still Military Dictatorships in Europe, not to speak of South America... which, toghether with mis-understood memories/propaganda of WW2, lent some sort of legitimacy to all tnis...

I recomend this article in The Local, much better than the last one;
